Joseph George Zeibel was born September 21, 1947 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia to Heyder George Zeibel and Izabel Dorthea Mayurnick Zeibel. He was drafted into the army in 1968 and served overseas in Asmara, Ethiopia. He married Donna Jane Sterrett on December 30, 1970. They had one child, a son, Jason George Zeibel born December 12, 1975. He was divorced in 1981 and married Lory Abernathy in 1986. They were divorced in 1997.
